Why we need deans!--Current issue of CCLeague News has articles of interest

In the July/August issue, our friends at the CCLeague explore, among other things, their alarm at the number of community college presidents--some call them CEOS--who are approaching retirement. What's wrong with that? After all, the retirement of the DVC president was a high point of the 2005-06 academic year. But apparently there is no good pipeline for new presidents. The article bemoans the difficulty of getting faculty to move into the deans positions which groom folks to become good college presidents, citing the lack of fiscal compensation for deans as the main reason why faculty wouldn't want those jobs (apparently the lack of autonomy isn't an issue).

Another article considers the various community college bond measures that were on the ballot this past spring, four of which were passed by voters and four of which were defeated; CCLeague observes that it's the first time as many have lost as have won (the cup must be half empty in their eyes). There's a survey of the eight campaigns, and a quote from our very own Ted Wieden.
